Warum ist die Wut auf diese Leute so gross ?
Bo Phut police and military officers descended on a restaurant on Lamai Beach that had organized an illegal drinks and music party.
Kannika Thongreuang, 48, identified herself as the manageress and was charged with selling alcohol out of hours.
Two bottles of beer and a couple of bills were taken in evidence.
Four French musicians - some pictured on the Bo Phut police website - were arrested for illegal work without a permit.
One was playing drums, another on sax, a third on bass and another playing guitar. They were singing too. They were taken away to Bo Phut police station.
The party was attended by 100 Thais and foreigners and a sign on the police page read "Hippie Festival Samui".
All IDs and passports of attendees were checked during the raid yesterday.
Complaints had been received about an illegal party.
Police raid “Hippie Festival Samui,” arrest French musicians for allegedly working without a permit | The Thaiger
No masks, no social distancing,,,,,,,,,these idiots give us all a bad name.

Thailand has controled and managed the covid crisis very well BECAUSE everybody behaved responisible.
Please any foreigner wanting to be stupid and being a pain in the ass, a few words of advice. GO BACK. AND. DONT. COME BACK.
Enjoy yr own country ravaged by covid and wonder why ?
Good job by the Thai police to arrest these idiots.

I saw a (non Thai) graffiti artist one time in BKK. I just casually asked, as he was painting in an exposed spot, if the had a work permit. I got a blank stare.
Doesn't matter how much they are told. They are too cool to worry about actual laws.
That being said there are western musicians who jam in bars in Bangkok. Even used to be western bands. As long as local bill knows and is paid, all is OK.

It was in the news a few years ago, one of those street artists was arrested for just what you describe. He was doing caricature sketches of passersby and giving them away free. He did not charge anybody so much as one satang. He was taken to jail.

I used to play at a bar in Jomtien. It was a jam session and money was collected as a benefit for The Chameleon Society (children with HIV/Aids).
The bar owner had to purchase a blanket work permit for all musicians even though we were volunteering.
Not even a free beer. It's a disgusting racket.

It is like this. If you get paid or not is not important. It is the same in many other countries. So nothing Thailand specific.

No foreigner can get a work permit to play music or to paint a house. Both occupations are reserved by law exclusively for Thais.
The theory is, that even if somebody is working free,
they are taking work from a Thai.
So, listen up, folks, no jam sessions, period.
If you do, it had better be behind closed and locked doors with the curtains drawn. And don't paint your house either.
