Sugar daddies sweetening lives of many at university
Students receiving up to B50,000 per month
Sirikul Bunnag
Despite being unable to call on their families for financial assistance, many women from poor backgrounds are pursuing further education without the need to take out student loans from the state. Instead, they rake in up to 50,000 baht per month by acting as mistresses to male benefactors, often to more than one.
Ple, a 23-year-old student at a Bangkok university, said she decided to turn to this method of securing an income when her family's business failed while she was in her second year of studies.
Ple's boyfriend gives her 30,000-50,000 baht per month, depending on the performance of his business, from which Ple has been able to build a six-digit savings account. He has also bought her a 400,000-baht fully furnished condominium and a mobile phone.
``I have to sleep with him whenever he wants. I pamper him and keep him company when we go out,'' she said. ``I have agreed not to bother his wife.''
Ple said seven of the 10 students in her circle of friends at university were also supported by boyfriends, but some had to take two or three lovers to attain her level of income. One co-student, she said, is looked after financially by a local man and a foreigner, each of whom pays her 20,000 baht per month.
``She arranges her schedule so neither man realises they are sharing their mistress,'' Ple said. ``Sometimes, the foreigner sends her airline tickets so she can visit him abroad.'' According to Ple, this form of securing an income is preferable to taking out state loans.
``It's more money. An educational loan yields a meagre monthly income,'' she said. ``Besides, not all loan applications are approved, and even if they are, the amount is insufficient to meet most students' requirements.''
She had tried working part-time, including selling insurance and working in a department store, but the earning potential was too low, she said.
The Rajabhat Institute's Suan Dusit campus recently conducted in-depth research into 25 female Bangkok university students who rely on lovers to get by.
According to Asst Prof Sukhum Chaloeysap, deputy rector of the campus, the women generally targeted middle-income state officials, office workers or entrepreneurs, whom they usually met at nighttime entertainment districts.
One claimed to have a politician as a lover, he said. Those not lucky enough to find a man willing to be their sole sponsor were forced to conduct several relationships simultaneously.
Some women had up to five benefactors, he said, adding many used a different mobile phone for each lover.
``These men pay 3,000-5,000 baht per month to their mistresses because it is much cheaper than paying for regular prostitutes,'' he said.
Ich weiß, dass Thema hatten wir schon, fand aber diesen BKK-Postartikel trotzdem interessant.
