Aufgrund der enorm gestiegenden Korallenschäden durch unerfahrene Taucher, sollen Tauchgebiete bei den Similan Islands gesperrt werden.
Von Sperren ebenfalls betroffen sind :
Ko Kao, Ko Si, Ko Ha and Ko Hok, sowie
Ko Neung, Ko Song, Ko Sam und Fantasy islands
Sea off Similans to be zoned
Achathaya Chuenniran
The sea off Similan Islands will be zoned for diving to stop inexperienced divers damaging coral reefs.
Witthaya Hongwiangcha, chief of Similan Island National Park, said zoning was needed to prevent further damage to coral in the Andaman Sea, especially at Christmas Point off Ko Kao.
Ko Kao, Ko Si, Ko Ha and Ko Hok would be closed temporarily on Nov 15 to revitalise the coral. Diving would be restricted to Ko Neung, Ko Song, Ko Sam and Fantasy islands during the respite.
Two kinds of zones would be created, for basic dives and advanced or deep-sea dives. The zones would be drawn up during the respite.
Chief Warrant Officer Chaichart Pongsri, an expert diver who has spent much of the past decade off Similan Islands, said non-experienced divers stepped on corals by accident.
Almost 40% of the coral off Ko Jed and Ko Paed islands had been destroyed.
