6,000 turtles confiscated
More than 6,000 protected turtles believed on their way to restaurants in Songkhla to serve Malaysian and Chinese diners were seized by forestry officials in Nakhon Pathom's Bang Len district yesterday.
In Bangkok, police confiscated a large number of protected animals including pangolins, crocodiles and snakes.
Forestry chief Plodprasop Suraswadi said there was firm evidence that governent officials were conspiring with wildlife poachers.
The turtles, a protected species under the Wildlife Reservation and Protection Act, were worth about 300 baht each, or around 1.84 million baht in total, said Witoon Rermwirat, head of Ratchaburi provincial forestry office.
They were packed in 145 boxes and were in poor condition.
The captured animals would be released in Khao Laem and Sri Nakharin national parks in Kanchanaburi province.
In Bangkok, 300 turtles, 40 snakes and crocodiles were seized in Onnuj district yesterday.
In Samphran district of Nakhon Pathom, police arrested three people with 300 pangolins after stopping a 10-wheel truck on Phetkasem road.
The pangolins, in crates concealed under processed rubber wood, were believed to have come from Malaysia.
