The Abhisit government has increased its popularity by delaying the Bhumjaithai party's controversial project to lease 4,000 NGV buses, former deputy premier and finance minister Pridiyathorn Devakula said on Friday.
He expected the democrat-led administration would be able to stay in power for more than one year as a result, and would be able to come up with various infrastructure development mega-projects to further boost the economy.
Mr Pridiyathorn warned that the US economy had not yet recovered and domestic spending there was still low.
Thailand should refrain from relying on recovery in the US, the European Union and Japan to shore up its economy.
The country should instead turn to tightening trade and investment ties with China, where the economic growth rate would be as high as 10% in the second half of this year, the former finance minister said.
