Government censors news of coup rumours
(BangkokPost.com) - Prime Minister's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair is set to issue a ban by government officials and staff of the Public Relations Department on reporting any news about persistent rumours that a military coup could be imminent.
The reports have twice been cited by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, but it was not clear if Mr Jakrapob's order was also trying to gag the premier.
Mr Jakrapob insisted that he is not censoring the state media, although he was unable to come with a different word. He said he does not want the media to report news that would lead to conflicts.
His order does not apply to newspapers, magazines and community radio. But he called on reporters at private companies to use careful judgement before reporting anything.
Mr Jakrapob also said media control is his responsibility, and insisted that he does not want to have problems with media beyond his orders
