Man held for airport pics
The Nation 7. October 2001
An Indian-American was arrested yesterday while taking pictures of
Bangkok International Airport from its north side.
Sunil Gupta, 35, was arrested in Thatcha Housing Estate, adjacent to
the airport. He was held after a resident on the estate alerted Don
Muang Police that a man of Middle Eastern appearance was taking
photographs of the north side of the airport. The caller told police
he suspected Gupta might have links with terrorists, police said.
But after a three-hour interrogation by senior police officials and
representatives of the US Embassy, the man was released. Gupta was,
however, temporarily banned from leaving the country.
He said he was an engineer with an American company on a business trip
to Taiwan, and that he loved taking pictures of aircraft and airports.
Police quoted Gupta as saying he had first tried to take pictures at
the airport itself, but was prevented by security guards.
