Decision on airport trains `needed now'
Opening date not likely to be met

An urgent and final decision is needed on a mass transit system linking the new airport at Nong Ngu Hao with Bangkok, or the opening could be delayed, the head of the airport company said yesterday.
A source at the State Railway of Thailand said it was already too late.
Gen Somchai Somprasong, acting managing director of New Bangkok International Airport Co, said pile driving for a new transport link must begin in October at the latest, because the substructure of the airport terminal would be sealed then. Any later and the ground floor of the terminal would have to be reopened. This would delay the airport project.
The new international air hub, given the official name Suvarnabhumi Airport by His Majesty the King, is scheduled to open in 2005.
An SRT official said a start could not be made on the transit system until the plan received approval from the supervising government committee and budget funding. If the NBIA was that concerned, the company should advance funding for initial construction. Even so, there was no way the transport system could be completed in time for the inauguration of the airport, he said.
The SRT's planned system would stretch 28.4km from Phya Thai to the new airport. Of this, 15km would be elevated above existing eastern tracks, and the last 1.4km adjoining the airport would be underground. The estimated cost is 31 billion baht.
A Transport and Communications Ministry official said the SRT's system would take longer to complete than an extension of the BTS skytrain network from Onnuj to the new airport. The skytrain route would be about 20km long and cost about 21 billion baht.
The official agreed urgent and decisive action was needed. Building of the transport system must also be free of vested interests, or construction could be delayed.
He said the new Kuala Lumpur international airport was initiated after Nong Ngu Hao, but was already completed thanks to authorities' decisiveness.
