Two die in welfare office grenade blast
Parcel explodes as police pose for media
A parcel bomb exploded at the Nakhon Pathom social security office yesterday, killing two policemen, seriously injuring three others and slightly wounding two journalists.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Interior Minister Wan Muhamad Nor Matha and national police chief Sant Sarutanond all insisted the explosion was not a terrorist attack.
The parcel, addressed only to the social security office, arrived on Friday.
Pol Gen Sant said Sathit Saleepol, an office staffer, checked it and called police after spotting a hand grenade inside.
Nakhon Pathom traffic superintendent Narong Sapyen, who was well-trained in peacekeeping, looked and decided it was an M-26 hand grenade and asked a bomb disposal unit for help.
Pol Lt-Col Narong then left Pol Lt-Col Wasitpol Yingcharoen, Pol Lt Prawit Chaemmunkhong, Pol Sgt-Maj Narong Chantasote, Pol Sgt Kwanchai Thammasuna and Pol Corporal Pradit Boonkerd at the office.
Atthakrit Kaewkham, of a cable TV station, and Kriangsak Puthasarn, from iTV, arrived at the welfare office and asked to take pictures of the parcel.
Pol Sgt-Maj Narong, who used to work with a demolition unit, posed for them, Pol Gen Sant said.
The sergeant-major posed as if he was opening the box when the grenade went off, killing him instantly.
Pol Cpl Pradit died later at Sanam Chan hospital from serious wounds to his face and left eye.
Pol Lt-Col Wasitpol, Pol Sgt Kwanchai and Pol Lt Prawit received shrapnel wounds.
Pol Gen Sant said Pol Sgt-Maj Narong should not have touched the parcel in the first place, since he had no equipment with him to defuse the bomb.
He would have to consider issuing new regulations for police to follow when handling bombs.
Deputy national police chief Kowit Wattana said police suspected the sender of the parcel bomb intended some revenge against an employee at the office.
``The sender is believed to be in conflict with someone in that office, or might have a problem with the office itself,'' Pol Gen Kowit said.
A labour source said conflict between the office and an influential figure who allegedly demanded 50-60 people pay him 30,000 baht to get them on social security welfare might be behind the blast.
The people who paid that person complained to the office after finding they were not getting the benefits.
The office sued the influential figure, who allegedly threatened staff members.
The case was before court. A village headman was shot dead shortly before he was to give evidence for the villagers.
``What happened was an ordinary crime and absolutely will not affect foreign confidence in Thailand,'' Mr Thaksin said.
Mr Wan Nor said police who were not bomb experts should learn from the accident.
