Phuket : Yacht missing from Racha Yai anchorage

Yacht missing from Racha Yai anchorage

KOH RACHA: A yacht sailing Phuket’s waters has disappeared, believed stolen, while the crew were having supper ashore on Koh Racha Yai on Friday.

The yacht is the Wado Ryu, a white-hulled 12.5-meter sloop. The name of the yacht is painted in large letters along the hull. She is registered in Germany.

Pumo Stappelton, the boat’s skipper, told the Gazette that she arrived at Racha Yai at 4 pm on Friday after a four-week passage from Australia. She and crewman “Rocky” were on the way to Turkey to deliver the boat to its owner.

“By the time we arrived at Racha Yai, we reckoned it would be too late to sail into Phuket, so we decided to stay for the night, to have something fresh to eat, and a beer, and also to celebrate [a belated] Christmas.”

She said, “We made everything ready to leave the next morning, then went ashore. But when we got back at 11 pm the boat wasn’t there anymore.”

She asked a fishing boat to go out and try to find Wado Ryu but five hours of searching turned up no sign of the yacht. “We looked everywhere, but found nothing. So then we slept on the beach; we had no money, no phones, no passports – all of that was in the boat.”

The yacht’s disappearance was reported to Chalong Police Station, the Marine Police and the Third Area Naval Command.

Meanwhile, Chris Sieber, owner of the 46-foot catamaran Kilo, which went missing off Kata Beach on December 18, said today that no one has yet come forward with information leading to that yacht’s recovery, despite the offer of a US$5,000 (200,000 baht) reward.

Mr Sieber dismissed rumors that Kilo had been found off Sumatra. “No, we’ve heard nothing yet,” he said.

Anyone with information about the Wado Ryu should contact Ms Stappelton at the Shanti Lodge on Chao Fa West Rd, Tel: 076-280233 or Email: kim@shantilodge.com

    Missing yacht found adrift

PHUKET: The 12.5-meter yacht Wado Ryu, which went missing from the anchorage off Koh Racha Yai on Friday, was located this afternoon, drifting in waters about 50 kilometers south of Phuket.

The yacht was spotted by another on its way to the Red Sea. The French crew of that yacht radioed the Wado Ryu’s position to the Phuket-based Mobile Maritime Network, which passed the good news to the crew, who are currently staying at the Shanti Lodge in Chalong.

The position of the boat has been reported to the Marine Police, and the Wado Ryu’s skipper, Pumo Stappelton, was, at time of posting this story, preparing to go out and recover it.

The boat was initially feared stolen, but it now appears that it may simply have dragged its anchor and drifted off.

und jetzt ist der Katamaran auch wieder da.

    Missing catamaran found in Andamans

ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS: It has been a week for stray yachts being found. First the Wado Ryu, which disappeared from Koh Racha, was found yesterday drifting off the south of Phuket. Today, the missing catamaran Kilo was recovered in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, some 250 kilometers from home.

The 46-foot catamaran disappeared from its mooring off Kata Beach just over a month ago.

Chris Sieber, the yacht’s owner, told the Gazette this afternoon that he had received a call from Rick Reynolds of the water sports equipment company Cobra in Chalong, at about midday.

“Rick said he had received a fax from a friend in Port Blair saying that Kilo was found in the Nicobar Islands. Apparently it was found by the Indian Coast Guard,” said Mr Sieber.

“I can tell you I was I really happy when I heard that.”

Mr Sieber said that he had yet to confirm the yacht’s condition as he had not been able to get in touch with the authorities in Port Blair.

However, he added, “A friend in Malaysia told me that the boat will be towed from Nicobar to Port Blair today.”

Mr Sieber said that, depending on the boat’s condition, he was looking forward to defending his Multihull Cruising Class title in the Royal Langkawi International Regatta early next month.
