    Chinese, Israeli investors eye Thailand

es geht wieder was weiter in Thailand.

Owners of at least 15 four- and five-star hotels in tourist cities are looking to sell their business to Chinese investors after being hard hit by the global economic crisis and the A(H1N1) flu pandemic, Industry Minister Charnchai Chairungruang said on Monday.

"Chinese investors are preparing to buy 15 or 16 four- and five-stars hotels in Thailand for 1,200-1,500 million baht each because the economic crisis and the flu have caused a sharp drop in their revenue.

''The owners of those hotels face cash flow problems. Many of them are not able to repay their due debts.''

Most of the tourist hotels in financial trouble were in Pattaya, Bangkok and Khon Kaen, said Mr Charnchai.

Chinese investors believe that tourism in Thailand would recover in two to three years. The Board of Investment was negotiating with Chinese investors and the government was ready to accord them investment privileges, Mr Charnchai said.

The industry minister said Chinese investors were also interested in setting up educational institutes in Thailand. Each would need at least 100 rai land and an investment of not less than one bilion baht.

These schools would establish ties and coordinate with educational institutes in China. Investors had two plans: One for students to first study in China for one year and the other three years in Thailand; the other for students to first study for two years in China and then two in Thailand.

The two countries already have student exchange programmes, he said.

Mr Charnchai said Israeli bisinessmen were also interested in investing in irrigation systems since Thailand is a farming country and set to implement many water-related projects.

The chairman of the Israeli-Asian Chamber of Commerce had invited him to visit Israel to see a water management system claimed to be the most modern of its kind in the world.

Mr Charnchai said he had instructed the Board of Investment to arrange a roadshow to Israel.
